From Noelle Barnes, Academic Advisor II Educational Administration & Human Resource Development

I find it appalling that you would let anyone else (GLBTA, the Corps, political organizations etc) respond to a negative article about them, but you will not allow us advisors to stand up to the accusations made in the recent article. Not once in the article does it mention that the majority of the students on this campus are lazy and do not take the responsibility for their own education. There are not 45,000 academic advisors on this campus. There are over a 100. You don't know how many 'Thank You's' my colleagues and I have received. There are good advisors on this campus.

Jessica's response is free speech, no matter the time limit you would print for some other event or minority. How about supporting the University where you are housed? Print Jessica's article.

From Amanda Mather, Academic Advisor,Department of Teaching, Learning, & Culture

I am writing to ask that you print the response from Jessica Newcomb, an Academic Advisor, to the article denigrating academic advisors (Opinion, Jan. 23, 2009.) It would only be fair to show the other side of the coin. We as advisors work very hard to make sure all students we meet with have the information they need to succeed, and stay on track to graduate. BUT- they are responsible for actually acting on that information. Students need to understand that they need to own their actions and decisions, and not place the blame on someone else.

Also, I feel that the article did a disservice to the many, many hardworking Academic Advisors on this campus. I do understand, and respect, the author's point of view, and am truly sorry she had a bad experience. But please do not tar all of us with the same brush- on the whole, we are a very dedicated group who genuinely care about our students and want to see them succeed.

Please reconsider your stance, and run Jessica's letter. Students should know that advisors are a resource for them, not a crutch .

Thank you for your time and consideration.

From Michael Balog, political science undergraduate advisor
Hi,

Please post the response.

It would make Ms. Newcomb and possibly other advisors happy.

Thanks and keep up the good work.
