Sophomores will have the opportunity to hear speakers from the Career Center and learn about professional workmanship at Memorial Student Center LEAD's Sophomore Leadership Conference on Saturday.

"SLC is an opportunity for sophomores to hear from great speakers and advance in leadership skills," said junior communication major Shanna Brown, public relations officer for MSC LEAD.

Patricia Alexander, an associate director at the Career Center, said this conference will prove vital to students' successes in future ventures.

"They are definitely leaders in the fact that they are students and as a Career Center we are in charge of helping them develop certain skills and we will be teaching them about networking," Alexander said. "It is very important for them to learn how to reach out and connect with others to be successful in their careers, so we want to make sure they learn that skill now."

Conference topics include applying for a job, balancing extracurricular and academic lives, working with diversity, networking with peers and other professionals, ethics in careers and leadership.

Sophomore aerospace engineering major Josh Stone plans to attend SLC.

"I'm expecting advice on how to prepare for career opportunities, and the necessary steps to take throughout the final years of my college career to ensure that I secure the future I want," Stone said.

SLC is organized and run by the campus outreach subcommittee of MSC LEAD. Sophomore mechanical engineering major Rico Martinez is on the committee.

"We've been working on it since the last month of last semester, so it's going to be great and we encourage sophomores from all walks of campus to come and learn how to succeed in college and their careers after," Martinez said. "It's captain planet themed, we have five different aspects and captain planet has five powers; so we want to give the attendees power in the five areas we feel most important to stand out."

Sophomore biomedical science major Jon Hicks is another member of MSC LEAD who will be attending the conference.

"I am very excited about SLC this weekend because I get to participate in leadership activities which will advance my leadership skills, listen to renowned speakers for their advice and experiences and meet new and amazing people," Hicks said.
