In response to "Reverse culture shock."
First, let me preface this with the fact that I'm from Austin. I have traveled through Europe and lived in New Zealand for a few months. I know there are far more people out there who could tell far greater tales than I of their travels, but I say all of this having foreign experience.
Thus, bashing this culture for bashing other cultures doesn't make sense. Look around. Dare I say that diversity is here, even if you have to look under a few rocks.
Diversity is not on a Friday night out at Northgate. It's in the Brazos Valley World Festival. It's in the Study Abroad office and the stories of returning travelers. It's in the diversifying efforts of the Northgate Music Festival. It's in the fall semester's occasional sidewalk art under the Wellborn tunnel. It's in the work of International Justice Mission and other on-campus international social justice organizations.
Diversity is here. Let's concentrate on that rather than calling out a lack thereof. If we give it a good ground to grow upon, future generations of Aggies may be able to enjoy a whole new reputation. But, telling Aggies that we are uneducated, backward farmers is not the way to allow growth. It's not fair. Nor true.
