The Texas A&M softball team lost its first game of the season in the first of two games Saturday. The match against Tulsa was the third game of four in the Aggie Classic Tournament.
The Aggies took the field as the designated 'visitors' against the Golden Hurricane in the top of the first with little offensive production.
Junior Golden Hurricane pitcher Jackie Lawrence threw a strikeout in the first at bat of the game against sophomore Kelsey Spittler. She finished the inning with back-to-back ground outs from two more Aggies.
In seven innings, Lawrence allowed three hits and two earned runs, both in the seventh inning.
"She pitched very well out there," said A&M Head Coach Jo Evans. "I saw her throw a no-hitter against Oklahoma last year, she's good."
The Aggies were under the direction of freshman pitcher Rebecca Arbino. Arbino gave up a hit in the first at bat to junior outfielder Lauren Lindsay.
Arbino allowed another hit two batters later to senior short stop Kailey Yarmer, who went 4-4 at the plate against the Aggies. The Tulsa offensive stand was ended by Aggie second baseman Natalie Villarreal, who snagged a line drive deep in the infield and caught the runner at first for a double play.
After the inning, both teams failed to produce runs in the next four and a half innings.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Golden Hurricane ended the hitless streak with an RBI by junior Venessa Vice. Vice bounced a wild grounder back to the pitcher with runners on first and third. Arbino released the ball too quickly while trying to throw out the runner at home, resulting in a one run lead for Tulsa.
The Aggie offense answered back after going hitless for six innings with back-to-back bunt singles by juniors Macie Morrow and Bailey Schroeder, who pinch hit for freshman Taryn Broussard.
After back-to-back outs by the Aggies, Villarreal hit a single into right field to score both Morrow and Schroeder. The single gave A&M a 2-1 lead.
