Texas A&M students can file to run for a leadership position in the 2009-2010 Student Government through Friday online or at the Memorial Student Center.
Students must file with the Election Commission in order to participate in elections for many major student government positions. Elections include student body president, senior and junior yell leader, senator, Class Council president and Resident Hall Association president and vice-president.
To register in the elections, students must provide personal information and contact information. The filing fees fund Commission advertisement and the facilitation of the election process. The fee is $25 for student body president and yell leader; for all other positions, it is $15. The fee can be left in a drop box in Koldus or paid at the Commission table in the Memorial Student Center.
After completing the filing process, candidates can begin to build a platform and campaign. All candidates are required to attend a general meeting February 17, during which specifics about the campaign process will be discussed. Campaigning will be the week after Spring Break, March 23-31.
The Election Commission emphasizes that running for an office is an excellent way to be a part of the A&M traditions and community.
"I would encourage students to run so that they can help lead our University and represent their fellow students," said Election Commissioner Zach Johnson. "Running for any office is one of the greatest ways to give back to our University."
The Election Commission expects between 100-150 students to apply to run in the elections. Historically, the office with the most candidates is student body president.
Within Student Senate, 62 senators will be elected for the 2009-2010 academic year. Senators are elected to represent each of the 10 Colleges, the Corps of Cadets, Northside, Southside, Off-Campus and University Apartments.
Tanner Wilson served last year as a senator from Northside and has filed to run again for the same position.
