The Texas A&M Women's golf team left Texas to compete in Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge feeling as though they had an advantage having been able to practice in the warm Texas temperatures. Upon arriving in Palos Verdes Estates, California that advantage no longer remained as temperatures ranged in the low 40's to mid 50's with wind gusts from 10-20mph. After 54 holes of golf, the Aggies finished in 15th place with a collective score of 120 over par which was 74 strokes behind the tournament winner No. 2 Arizona State.
Palos Verdes Golf Club is known to be a difficult golf course where few players manage to score under par and the course held on to its reputation. In a field of 84 competitors, not a single player managed to finish the tournament under par and only two players were able to score under par for a single round. One of those two players was Arizona State's Juliana Murcia who is No. 50 in the country individually. Murcia was the closest to finishing under par, winning the tournament with a score of one over par.
The Aggies were led by sophomore Sarah Zwartynski who was playing Palos Verdes Golf Club for the second time in her collegiate career. Zwartynski was in 14th after two rounds of play with a score of 13 over par before shooting 10 over par in the final day of the tournament. Zwartynski dropped down the leader board twenty spots to finish 34th with a score of 23 over par.
Senior Lauren Johnson and junior Ashley Freeman both finished the tournament tied in 57th place with a score of 30 over par. During the first two rounds of play Johnson recorded scores of 12 and 13 shots over par. On the final round of play, Johnson was able to recover posting a score of 76 or five over par. Freeman had a similar tournament posting scores of 12 and 14 over during the first two rounds, but like Johnson recovered during the final round with a score of four over par.
Although the Aggies finished in 15th place, they were able to lower their total score each round by an average of six and half strokes. Texas A&M will look to continue that trend when they compete in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on March 16-18.
