Junior guard Tanisha Smith recorded her first career double-double in No. 12 Texas A&M's 79-50 win against Colorado Saturday at Reed Arena.
"I was a little focused today," Smith said. "In the past I was letting my team down, not doing everything to my ability."
Smith scored a team-high 15 points off the bench and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds in the Aggies' third annual Beat the Hell Outta Breast Cancer game.
Almost 4,500 fans helped pink-out Reed Arena in honor of former North Carolina State Head Coach Kay Yow, who recently passed away from the disease.
"Life is precious," said A&M Head Coach Gary Blair. "It's very meaningful when you lose a great person, its more important than losing a great player or a great coach. She was just a great person."
With the win, the Aggies improved to 19-5 overall and 7-4 in Big 12 play while the Buffaloes fell to 10-12 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
A&M got off to a quick start against Colorado, taking an 8-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. After Buffaloes' sophomore forward Brittany Spears scored Colorado's first points at the 16:19 mark, the Aggies stretch the lead to 17-2 with 10:46 remaining in the first half.
Spears scored 10 of the Buffalo's 16 first half points but A&M's offense was too much. The Aggies rolled to a 38-16 score before going to the locker room.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Colorado went on a 9-0 run to chip the Aggies' lead to 17 points at 50-33 but the Buffaloes could not catch up.
"We became a little bit more of a driving team at that point," said Colorado Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller. "A&M just did a great job of really guarding the perimeter, switching everything. I thought we had a lineup in there that was a better driving team than our starting lineup is."
A&M stopped the run when sophomore guard Sydney Colson hit a layup with 12:03 remaining in the half. Colson scored six points in the game.
