The Aggies claimed the top spot in the preseason Big 12 coaches poll on Tuesday. A&M swept the voting, receiving nine first place votes. The league's head coaches are not allowed to vote for their team so one of the ten first place votes went to Texas. The Aggies won the Big 12 championship tournament in 2007 and won the regular season title in 2008. A&M has not been selected to finish first in the league since 1999.
Two Aggie pitchers were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association 2009 Stopper of the Year watch list. Relievers junior Travis Starling and senior Kyle Thebeau were among 40 pitchers from across the nation named to the list Tuesday. The award is given each year to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.
Four members of the A&M baseball team were selected to preseason all-conference teams by two national publications on Feb. 12. Senior first baseman Luke Anders, senior outfielder Kyle Colligan and Starling were named to Baseball America's preseason All-Big 12 team. Rivals.com selected Anders, Colligan and Thebeau to its preseason All-Big 12 team.
USA Baseball named Anders to its preseason Gold Spikes Award watch list on Tuesday. The award, which is sponsored by Major League Baseball, is given to the top college baseball player each year. The initial list consists of 50 players from around the nation but those named on the preseason list are not the only players eligible to win.
