The No. 25 Texas A&M men's golf team will open its 2009 season in Hawaii on Feb. 18 in the John A. Burns Invitational.

The Aggies will look to pick up where they left off in 2008, when they finished their fall season by winning two of three tournaments they entered. A&M won the Adams Cup in September and wrapped up their fall season in October with a victory at the Baylor Intercollegiate tournament.

At the John A. Burns Invitational in 2008, the Aggies finished in second place with a score of 33-under par, second best in school history. The Aggies will compete against a field of 17 teams, includes No. 9 Arkansas and No. 20 University of Nevada-Los Vegas.

"This team has the ability to take it low over here," said Head Coach J.T. Higgins. "We have played well here in the past, so we are expecting good things to happen."

Leading the way for the Aggies will be senior Bronson Burgoon, who ranks fifth in the nation individually. In the fall, Burgoon maintained an average of 70.22 strokes per round, captured an individual victory at the Adams Cup, and finished in the Top 15 in every fall tournament.

Sophomore Conrad Shindler will also represent the Aggies in the tournament after recording an average of 73.89 strokes per round in the fall, third best on the team. Shindler had two tournaments in which he finished in the Top 15 during the fall.

Playing in the first tournament of his collegiate career for the Aggies will be freshman Geoff Shaw. Shaw is used to winning tournaments as he comes from Edmond North High School in Oklahoma where his school captured four consecutive state championships. Junior Golf Score Board ranked Shaw No. 30 in the nation for the recruiting class of 2008.

Also competing for the Aggies over the weekend will be senior Matt Van Zandt, junior Andrea Pavan, or sophomore Nacho Elvira. The three Aggies competed in a qualifier tournament on Tuesday to determine who would fill the final two spots.

After not playing in a tournament for more than three months, the Aggies will kick-off the 2009 season in Leilehua , Hawaii. The Aggies will compete in six tournaments before traveling to Hutchinson, Kansas for the Big 12 Championships in April.

"It feels like we have been off for a long time so we are really excited to get back out on the road." Higgins said. "We have looked pretty good in qualifying and I hope that carries over into the tournament."
