MAILCALL
By: Martin Griggs
Issue date: 2/20/09 Section: Opinion
In response to Jay Cunningham's mail call about the Aggie Assurance program on Feb. 19:
A DISGRACE? Jay, wake up and smell the Folgers brewing. We live in a world where opportunity is open to more people than ever before. I support A&M for taking bold action in letting more students potentially be able to afford college. Let's look at this issue from a social point. Maybe the students who will receive aid from this program have gone through hard times with the death of a parent and the surviving parent never had the means to economically recover. Should the student be punished for having to take responsibility for their own education sooner? Does parental economic standing determine ability in college? Should these people have to once again prove themselves by paying off $40,000 in debt while other students walk out scotch free? The students are the ones who have to pay in the end not the parents. The only thing that we can acknowledge is that they worked just as hard to get into the same university that you and I are in. Please don't let new army go to hell and don't let your closed mind disgrace A&M.
