Last second heroics from sophomore catcher Kevin Gonzalez propelled Texas A&M to a 7-6 victory in the first game of a double header against Wright State on Saturday at Olsen Field.
In the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs and runners on second and third base, Gonzalez knocked a single through the right side of the infield to score senior centerfielder Kyle Colligan from third base, improving the Aggies' record to 2-0.
Gonzalez did not start the game, replacing junior Joe Patterson behind the plate in sixth inning. The hit was his second of the season.
"I wasn't really getting any good hits," Gonzalez said. "I kept trying to pull everything and it kept going up in the air. I decided to choke up on the bat and try to hit something up the middle. First pitch he threw one I just swung at it, trying to hit it on the ground, and it happened."
The game went back and forth before the Raiders capitalized on a four-run sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead. A&M recovered in the seventh inning, pushing two runs across the plate and freshman Adam Smith knocked a solo home run in the eighth inning to tie the game.
Sophomore Barrett Loux started on the mound for the Aggies, throwing four innings of no-hit baseball before giving up a single to Wright State shortstop R.J. Gundolff inthe fifth inning. Loux was replaced by senior Kyle Thebeau in the sixth inning.
Thebeau struggled in the eighth inning and was replaced by junior Shane Minks. Minks closed out the game to record the win.
Raiders' starter Rylan Ostrosky lasted 5.1 innings, striking out four and walking three.
Aggies' third baseman Caleb Shofner continued his hot streak, hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning. Shofner is batting .800 with a 1.800 slugging percentage.
