Hazing. The very word brings up a negative connotation that stings the hearts of many individuals in today's "progressive" society. At this University in particular, one can look back and see a long history of hazing, chronicled yearly in official yearbooks. Now, however, this establishment seeks to end hazing, once and for all. In truth though, this letter does not deal with hazing. It does not deal with whether it should be looked down upon, stamped out or swept under a rug. Nor does this letter question why the University casts a blind eye toward some hazing but takes such a fierce stand against other forms of it. This letter exists solely to protest the revealing of the names of two Cadets who were recently charged with hazing. These students, who are still innocent until proven guilty, have had their names unmistakably tarnished. Of the thousands of college students who pick up a copy of The Battalion every day, still more read it online. Publishing the names of these students to such a wide audience was a poor choice. Now, guilty or not, these students will have to face the relentless criticism, and that just isn't right.
