I found the article "Event provides insight into Mideast conflict" to be very misleading. According to Anas Safwat, the Muslim Student Association wanted to invite a speaker who was "not biased toward a certain religion, sect or political denomination." However, the invited speaker, Alison Weir, is widely regarded as a pro-Palestinian voice, not as the unbiased journalist the article portrays her as. The Anti-Defamation League characterizes Weir as an anti-Semite, referencing her numerous statements deriding Israel's actions and the Jewish religion. Weir was quoted saying, among other things: "[the Jewish religion is] such a ruthless and supremacist faith." I am afraid the MSA has chosen a speaker who will portray the situation in the Middle East as much more one-sided than they claim. This would not be a problem if the MSA did not masquerade this presentation as a completely unbiased report of the conflict in the Mideast. This is a difficult topic for one to find completely unbiased opinions. Perhaps a better option would have been to invite two speakers, one decidedly pro-Palestinian and one pro-Israeli. After each delivers their side of the story, the two could have an open forum debate session.
