Students and lab workers were evacuated from the Chemistry building Sunday afternoon because of a chemical leak, University Police said. A tank of liquid nitrogen behind the Chemistry building began leaking around 4:15 p.m Sunday, and was detected after a loud hissing sound started at the tank. The University Police Department, College Station Fire Department and the Environmental Health and Safety Department responded to the emergency immediately.
"The nitrogen tank has its own safety valves which come into operation in case of a leak," said Lt. John Fisher from UPD. "Because of the safety valves, the situation did not go out of control. The minute the valves stop operating and the hissing sound stops, the tank will be repaired." No injuries were reported on Sunday.
