Animals from dogs to cats to reptiles will help Aggies for Animal Rescue (AAR) raise money for its main fundraising event, Duct Tape, today in Rudder Plaza from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
"We have animals that are behavioral-tested and up-to-date on their vaccinations that wear T-shirts with duct tape so people can stick money on them," Jennifer Stafford, a senior biomedical
science major and fundraising officer of AAR, said of the fundraiser that takes place every semester.
Some members bring their own animals for the event, along with reptiles from Teresa's Reptile Hospice in Snook.
"We always get reptiles and they are a big hit because most people don't get to interact with them very often," said Ashley Mills, president of AAR and a senior biomedical science major. "They are our primary benefactor."
In addition to reptiles like tortoises and lizards, there are also ferrets, rats and rabbits.
During the event, people are allowed to play with the animals as well as take pictures with them.
"It's a really cool opportunity, especially for animal lovers missing their animals at home," said Amanda Flores, publicity chair of AAR and a junior biomedical science.
Flores said some of the animals have interesting stories and backgrounds. For example, one of the reptiles, Max, from Teresa's Reptile Hospice, who was hit by a truck before being rescued.
The money raised from the event is donated to various animal rescue organizations, Teresa's Reptile Hospice among them.
"One of our main goals as an organization is fundraising and bringing awareness to the community," Flores said. "All of our proceeds go to non-profit rescue organizations."
AAR was started in 1996 with goals of educating the community, fundraising and volunteering for animal-related causes.
They were the first organization on campus to allow members to bring pets to meetings.
"Our meetings are really fun and social," Flores said. "If people are afraid of a certain animal, we encourage them to come to our meetings and get over their fears."
