April is sexual assault awareness month and Texas A&M organizations are making sure students are informed.

The Women's Resource Center will be putting on two major events for sexual assault awareness month. The first is "These Hands Don't Hurt" and the second event is "Take Back the Night."

There will be a health resources fair to raise awareness of the resources and assistance students have in Bryan/College Station.

"These Hands Don't Hurt" is an event where students can dip their hands in paint and then stamp then on a banner, thereby pledging that "these hands" will not hurt another person with sexual violence.

The event will be taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 14 through April 16 at Rudder Fountain.

"I will definitely be taking part in 'These Hands Don't Hurt,'" said Scott Little, a freshman aerospace engineering major, "and I think that is an awesome idea. To me, that's one of the worst crimes because not only can it hurt somebody physically, but also it can damage their pride and self respect."

"Take Back the Night" will be a march around campus to raise sexual assault awareness. The aim of the event is to promote the concept that girls should not be in danger when walking across campus at night. The march begins at 7 p.m. April 23 at Simpson Drill Field.

"I think girls should not be scared to walk around campus and the take back the night event promotes that," said Michelle Meyer, a sophomore allied health major. "That is very important because even though people should be aware of their surroundings, but not to the point where they are afraid to go out."

The annual Health Fair will be set up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 8 in Rudder Plaza.

The Health Fair is put on to provide students with resources on campus and from the surrounding community.

In support of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Michelle Nail, a health educator at A.P. Beutel Health Center, said that the fair would include numerous resources that will help a wide range of students.

Phoebe's Home, Sheltering Arms and Twin City Missions provide domestic violent services to abuse and teen dating violence victims. Also in attendance will be the College Station Medical Center, which will be showcasing their Women's Wellness and Safety Program.

The TAMU Crime Prevention Department will be at the fair to provide information concerning sexual assaults and resources available on campus.

"It is very important for our students to become familiar with resources that our campus and community offer in regards to staying safe and maintaining a happy and healthy lifestyle," Nail said.
