After dropping the doubles point, No. 14 Texas A&M won five of the six singles matches to claim a 5-2 victory against No. 35 Tulsa Wednesday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
"It was a battle," A&M Head Coach Steve Denton said. "We let the doubles point go, but give credit to our guys. We were able to pull it out in what I thought would be a really tough match and it was."
The Aggies dropped a close contested doubles point that came down to the No.3 doubles match between A&M junior Marcus Lunt and sophomore Wil Spencer and Tulsa freshman Rusty Turpin and junior Marko Bollock.
The Aggie duo lost the pro-set in a tiebreaker, giving the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead heading into the singles matches.
"We had several opportunities," Denton said. "Our locker room was pretty glum after [losing the doubles point.]"
Krajicek, who ranks No. 51 nationally, tied the match count 1-1, winning his singles match at the No. 2 position 6-0, 6-2.
Lunt gave the Aggies a 2-1 lead, winning at the No. 5 singles position against Ballok 6-2, 6-0. The win snapped a two-game losing streak.
After facing off against the No.1 player in the nation on Sunday, Pollock was paired against
No. 2 Arnau Brugues at No. 1 singles. Pollock, who ranks No.19 nationally, upset Brugues in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, extending the lead to 3-1.
Tulsa narrowed the gap to 3-2 when juniors Philip Stephens defeated Spencer 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Colin Hoover clinched the match for the Aggies from the No. 6 singles position, winning his match 7-5, 7-5. Hoover fell behind 5-2 in the second set before winning five consecutive games to close out the match.
Sophomore Alexey Grigorov was blanked 6-0 in his first set, but battled win the second and third sets 6-3, 6-2, to secure the win, 5-2.
With the win, the Aggies improved their 2009 record to 12-5. The Aggies will remain at home for their first Big 12 match on Friday against Texas Tech. The Raiders have an 11-6 record.
