As part of its student coverage plan, UnitedHealthcare has implemented a 24/7 support program offering free consultation by phone regarding stress management, health concerns, substance abuse and financial and legal problems.

By calling the toll free number, students can speak with a master's level licensed clinician or registered nurse. They can receive contact information for an attorney or financial adviser. They can also set up a free consultation to discuss issues such as credit card debt, divorce, child-custody and shelter from abusive relationships.

"Our specialized Collegiate Assistance Program services give students the confidential assistance they need to deal with personal issues and crises before they interfere with concentration, attendance, motivation and potentially become high-risk behaviors," said Susan Barry, spokesperson for UnitedHealthcare Student Resources.

Students enrolled in the UHC Student Resources health plan can access the consultation by phone. The number can be found on the front of their insurance card.

UHC recognized that stress and depression are increasing on college campuses and that more students are seeking mental health services from campus counseling centers.

"We introduced the Collegiate Assistance Program to provide students with another resource to help them deal with stressors in their lives that might negatively impact their educational goals," Barry said.

Because it is available 24/7, the Collegiate Assistance Program can provide help during times that student health and counseling centers are closed. Also available at Texas A&M is Aggie HelpLine, a toll-free number that can be called between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m.

"HelpLine is staffed by knowledgeable Aggie volunteers who are very familiar with the TAMU environment, and know the resources on campus and in the community. These volunteers are well supervised and backed up by five licensed, SCS psychologists," said Dr. Maggie Gartner, director of Student Counseling Services.

HelpLine volunteers can set up students to receive counseling at the SCS if needed.
