A year after a runner up finish in the Women's College World Series, the Texas A&M softball team saw their 2009 run end in Gainesville at the regional round.
On May 15, the Aggies faced off against the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh University. A&M won the tightly contested match up 1-0 behind a first inning home run by Erin Glasco. Freshman pitched Rebecca Arbino gave up only four hits and struck out six to capture her fifth shutout of the season.
"The way we played defensively and in the circle really showed that we came prepared to play," said Head Coach Jo Evans to AggieAthletics.com.
All the momentum generated by Friday's victory came to a screeching halt on Saturday as the Aggies ran into the No. one team in the country, the Florida Gators.
A&M put up a fight against SEC pitcher of the year and All-American, Stacy Nelson, compiling nine hits including four by junior Macey Morrow. However, they could only muster one run, and the Florida offense came to life in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away. The 7-1 loss put the Aggies into a must win scenario in a rematch against Lehigh.
The rematch was again decided by one run, but it was the Mountain Hawks who prevailed 3-2 to advance to face the Gators in the Regional final.
Down 3-0 in the fifth, Freshman Kelsea Orsak lined a two out double to score both Holly Ridley and Bailey Schroeder. However, in the sixth and seventh innings, the Aggie offense went stagnant.
"Obviously we're really disappointed," Evans said. "We showed good intensity and played hard against Florida and we needed to bring that same kind of intensity against Lehigh and we came out flat."
The Aggie season full of expectations ended with a record of 32-22. Seniors Glasco, Ridley, and Savanah Lloyd saw their careers at A&M come to a close. Though this season has come to an end, the team returns ten position players and two pitchers in 2010.
"We're a really young team, so we're going to have a lot of returning starters who now have a year or two under their belt and that bodes well for our program," Evans said. "I'm looking forward to the future and I think it's a bright future for us. As disappointing as this is, we have to recognize that we can come back next year with more experience and more depth and have a really good season."
