Thoughts about Murano's resignation

The minds of students, Aggie fans and even Aggie opponents have been stirring since the news of President Elsa Murano's resignation was released.

Comments from articles in The Houston Chronicle and The Eagle indicate that most people are not surprised, but blame has been pointed to different people and issues.

Some simply blame Murano, and claim that she never had the best interest of the students at the core of her decisions. Her fans say she was an advocate of Aggie Spirit and that it was nice to see diversity at A&M.

But, many claim she had not fulfilled Robert Gates' hopes for the University.

Other comments stated that she was hired simply as a ploy for Texas A&M to look like a more diverse university.

The fact that she resigned seemed respectful to some, who saw her decision as a way of removing herself from the unpleasant spotlight that was shining on her position and the positions around her.

A list of input compiled from Facebook and Twitter reveals what many people think about Murano's situation:

• an accomplished, intelligent latina cannot last even one year before she's shoved out the door. proud day for a&m, indeed.

• Murano resigned..... FML! No doubt that the crooked board of regents was going to oust her anyway, she saved face... that slime-ball rick perry is behind it.. i know it!

• Rick Perry's probably behind it but I disliked Murano as president, as did a lot of students. She was pretty unpopular.

• president murano just resigned! that was sudden.

• its actually not her fault. They should fire mckinney, the head of the board of regents, not her. Many former ags are furious about this, and are threatening to withdraw large donations.

• so uncool: appoint someone who obviously isn't equipped to perform well to make a&m appear as though it's progressive, then make women+minorities look bad, just giving obnoxious ol ags an excuse to say "well, you saw what happened when a woman led..." so annoying + still thinking it was a publicity stunt in the first place.

way to be biased again battalion. this article makes it seem like the students liked Murano, when in reality, most of the students thought she is too liberal for A&M. (Continued…)

The day Perry gets president of this University is the day I switch schools. I ran the state into the ground as Gov. and will do the same for this University. (Continued…)

Wow David Duke Wiginton, you are the reason that people don't respect our great university and think that we are all white rednecks. Thanks a lot.

While I wish President Murano the best of luck in the future I have to say that I for one will not shed any tears to see her go. And I have to agree with the first poster here and say that I'm disappointed to see the article written so that it seems that the majority of university students are sorry to see her go. I welcome Rick Perry to come back to A & M. Murano was too liberal for our great university. I do not wish anything but good for her in the future, but she was not a good choice for our president. (Continued…)

I wasn't a Murano fan, but the fact is that she was pretty much forced out of the position by challenges that people purposefully put in her way. Whether I like her or not, McKinney got a vote of no confidence from the faculty and staff at A&M and I think that's saying a great deal about HIS character. (Continued…)

I want to know where everyone is getting that the Board of Regents are the ones behind this. For all we know this was a plan move on her part. Put down all your conspiracy theory, to include the one about the government blowing up the twin towers, and lets be reasonable. (Continued…)

Didn't like Murano OR the board of regents. Not sure we'll get anyone better for our next president, but I can hope. Besides, we're basically just holding out until we can convince Gates to come back. (Continued…)

President Murano, though having a short term, was a breakthrough at Texas A&M University. Eventhough one hits a rough path and is the cause of discouragment to continue, if you believe in something, such as the welfare of the University, you should fight no matter the consequences. (Continued…)
