The U.S. national soccer team looked to make history with a victory over Brazil after an unexpected run through the FIFA Confederation's Cup, a run that saw a historic 2-0 upset of No. 1 Spain Wednesday.
The run looked to end with a win, as the U.S. went into Sunday's championship game's halftime with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey.
Brazil then made the second half comeback with three unanswered goals to win 3-2.
"You realize why these guys are worth so much at times like this, but it's still disappointing," Donovan told the Associated Press. "We are in the position where we don't want respect, we want to win."
Brazil's Luis Fabiano scored two goals to tie the game, but Lucio scored the third and winning goal in the 83rd minute.
"We gave up the first goal so early in second half," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. "We really put ourselves in a tough spot."
The loss puts the U.S. 1-14 all-time against Brazil. The lone win coming in 1998 with a 1-0 victory in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
"I think people around the world see that we have a good team, we have good players," Bradley said. "Hopefully we can continue to step forward."
