Senior petroleum engineering major Eric Beckham resigned as student body president Monday, citing personal reasons.
"After a great deal of reflection and thought, I have decided that I will no longer be able to effectively fulfill the responsibility of the office of Student Body President," Beckham said in an e-mail to the student body.
Senior mechanical engineering major Kolin Loveless, elected in April as speaker of the Student Senate, will take over as student body president for the 2009-2010 school year, as stated in the Student Government Association's constitution.
"I cannot think of anyone more passionate about this university, and I trust [Loveless] completely," Beckham said. "I look forward to seeing the great things that he and his team will accomplish."
Loveless accepted the position at 2 p.m. Monday, and was sworn in by 5 p.m.
He said that the speaker of the Student Senate has many of the same responsibilities as the student body president, and that he has what it takes to step into Beckham's shoes.
"I'm aware of the stress of the job," Loveless said. "I'm a person who likes to work hard, I like to be busy. Since part of me enjoys that, I'll be all right."
Beckham ended his e-mail with the wish that the student body would rally around Loveless, and the reassurance that the idea of serving students will not be forgotten.
Loveless said he's looking forward to the school year, and giving back to Texas A&M.
"The circumstances are far from ideal, we're replacing virtually the entire administration," Loveless said. "There's a lot of construction on campus and it's going to present a challenge. But I'm excited about it. I'm excited about the challenge and I'm excited about the opportunity to give back."
Loveless will fill the position of student body president until the 2010 elections in April.
