The No. 22 Texas A&M soccer team was looking to advance to the Elite Eight for the second year in a row, but a double overtime goal by No. 5 Florida State ended the Aggies' 2009 season by the score of 2-1.
"I'm incredibly proud of our players," said Head Coach G Guerrieri. "They proved to be a pretty worthy adversary for a terrific Florida State team. To be able to keep our discipline and play out of the pressure they put on us in certain parts of the field took some special efforts."
The win was the Seminoles' 18th straight home win this season.
The teams traded chances throughout the first half, but the Seminoles seemingly controlled possession earning a 7-4 shot lead through the first 45 minutes. Neither team, however, could capitalize, and the two teams went into halftime tied at 0.
The Aggies got on the board first in the 55th minute when a shot by freshman forward Nora Skelton hit the bottom of the crossbar and after a couple headers, the ball was at junior midfielder Rachel Shipley's foot. She fired a shot into the back of the net from the top of the box to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
The lead didn't last long, however, as the Seminoles' Lauren Switzer headed in a cross from Casey Short in the 65th minute to make the score 1-1.
The Aggies and Seminoles continued to battle throughout the next 25 minutes, but at the final whistle the teams were still tied.
In the first overtime period, the Aggies fended off three Seminole chances to force a second overtime, but in the 108th minute Jessica Price ended the match and sent Florida State to the Elite Eight.
"It was a tough game and it took some great play from Florida State to get it done," Guerrieri said. "The winning goal was a terrific counter attack from them and a great individual effort to get into some tough places. It was a quality finish by Price."
The loss was reminiscent of the Aggies' 2-1 loss in double overtime last season at North Carolina.
It also ended the storied careers of two Aggies as seniors Cydne Currie and Emily Peterson have played their last games for the maroon and white.
"Every one of the players on our team has a lot to be proud of," Guerrieri said. "Our team has been able to battle through a lot of adversity this year, and our players have been able to step up to different challenges."
